Some travelers are happy just partying their way around the world. You, however, are looking for a more substantial experience. Working and volunteering abroad not only gives you the opportunity to give back to the community but it gives you something to do, somewhere to go, and somewhere to stay - and at most times at a cheaper cost. It really gives you the chance to do all sorts of crazy jobs you’d probably never even think of trying at home. Not only that, but you will do things that you never imagined you were capable of by challenging your limits. As our friends from Operations Groundswell say, its "Backpacking With A Purpose". You will still get to see all the ruins and will get to visit the local pub, but you will also be putting your time to good use helping those who may be less fortunate than you.
Hang off the outside of the CN Tower in Toronto - Bungee Jump in New Zealand - White Water Raft in Africa - Cave Tubing in Belize are just a few of the fun and exciting things to do abroad, but there is a whole other side of it that you wouldn't even imagine. You will get to experience new culture and learn new ways of living by broadening your horizon while making new friends with locals and other travellers. You’ll be able to connect with everyday folks, as eager to learn about your home country as you are to learn about theirs. You will improve (or learn) a new language, while networking and of course travelling. Volunteering and working abroad is a great way to experience life outside of the normal tourist attractions. It's not just about opening up a guide book and going to the coolest café in Ireland, its about connecting with the community and making a huge difference in the world. You might not see it, but to them you made there life that much better.
Being a volunteer requires you to give up your time and money to help others. Most volunteers leave their experience having gained a considerable amount of knowledge that is hard to find anywhere else. I know it sounds a little cliché, but we are always hearing phrases like " it's a life changing experience" - and that it is. In our opinion (and those of most volunteers), to get involved at a grassroots level is infinitely more helpful and rewarding than a simple donation. As Almost Fearless Backpackers like to say "love is the greatest gift you can give". So show your love to the people of the world by working and volunteering abroad.
