The common way to approach the New Year is with trepidation. We all know what we shouldn’t be doing, and most of this involves the various ways we seek pleasure in day to day life.
I think a nice way to reverse this is with travel plans. At the very beginning of this year, take the opportunity to dream. Dream about where you would like to go. Maybe even make it a long, impossible list about how you want to take cooking classes in France and hike up Manchu Picchu. Then maybe be a bit more conservative, but leave yourself at least one dream that you promise yourself will happen. You may have to give up a few of your day to day extravagances to get there. But this is a goal. And it is a whole lot more fun than promising to give up chocolate.
